BRIBIE ISLAND, QLD – The Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) is gearing up for an encore of last year’s resounding success, inviting the community to partake in creating a massive human turtle sculpture at Edwin Schrag Lookout on Woorim Beach. This grand event is scheduled for the 12th of November, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, symbolising not just artistic flair but a profound commitment to the conservation of nesting turtles.
The previous year saw a turnout of over 200 participants on Woorim Beach, collaboratively forming an impressive human sculpture of a giant turtle. This year, BIEPA is set to outdo itself. The event serves as a testament to the community’s dedication to safeguarding the nesting turtles and their hatchlings and doubles as an artistic homage to the island’s pristine environment.
Local talent Geoff Ginn, along with a crew of marshals, will steer participants in constructing the turtle sculpture, ensuring everyone contributes to shaping its carapace, head, or flippers. This interactive endeavour not only heightens environmental consciousness but also bolsters community spirit and camaraderie.
Adding to the grandeur, renowned wildlife photographer Darren Jew and his team will document the event with drones, making sure this special moment is captured and shared far and wide. These images, showcasing the community’s unified stand for turtle conservation, are anticipated to create a stir across media platforms and social networks.
In a nod to cultural heritage, youngsters (Jarjums) from the Pumicestone Independent Education and Environment Community (PIEEC) will greet attendees with a traditional smoking ceremony, enriching the event with indigenous elements. Moreover, Bribie Island Turtle Trackers are organising kid-friendly activities, ensuring the event is a hit with families.
Participants are encouraged to wear turtle-coloured shirts to visually enhance the sculpture. To further show support, BIEPA’s online shop is offering pre-orders for T-shirts and assorted turtle-themed merchandise, available for collection at the BIEPA stall on the day of the event.
The giant turtle sculpture initiative is not merely a celebration of the community’s affection for nature but also a call to action for the protection of Bribie Island’s marine life. Additionally, last year’s event significantly increased BIEPA’s profile, drawing many new members to its proactive environmental cause.
